<h1>ABOUT</h1><img src="forthebirds/lightsoutbird.png"></div>
"For The Birds" is an interactive storygame for players to learn about the impacts of |tooltip>[light pollution |tooltiptext>[Light pollution refers to artificial light that shines outdoors, like a bright billboard or a store sign.]] and urban development on |tooltip>[migrating|tooltiptext>[Migration is a seasonal journey many kinds of birds, insects, and animals take to find food, better shelter, or the perfect spot to have their young.]] birds as they navigate building a city that is beneficial for both people and wildlife.
Lights Out, Texas! is a campaign of education, awareness, and action that focuses on protecting the billions of migratory birds traveling through Texas each year!
<img src="forthebirds/hotelsignage.png"></div>
During |tooltip>[migration season |tooltiptext>[Spring Migration: March 1 – June 15
Fall Migration: August 15 – November 30]], turn off all non-essential nighttime lighting on buildings and other structures from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night. For more specific guidelines, visit <a href="https://tx.audubon.org/urbanconservation/lights-out-texas" target="_blank">Audubon Texas</div></a>.
<img src="forthebirds/birdsintro.png"></div>
Your efforts can have a big impact on reducing light pollution for the Peregrine falcon, Ruby-throated hummingbird, or Golden-cheeked warbler (among billions of others!) flying through your neighborhood. Share this game to teach others about the impact of light pollution and urban threats on bird migration!

Under "How To Participate", you find an email template you can send to your local city council to voice your support for making your city a part of the Lights Out, Texas! movement.
Using the links you find on the website, you find your local representative and easily send off an email to your city council members.
<img src="forthebirds/emailcitycouncil.png"></div>
Eventually, a city council member responds. Because of all the emails they received from residents like you, they are ready to issue a proclamation to encourage everyone in the city to follow Lights Out guidelines to protect birds!

Every night, all room lights must be turned off between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. If guests need to keep a light on, they must draw the curtains in their room closed so that no light spills outside.

One of the guests tells you about a special film that can be applied to windows. The film breaks up the reflection on the window's surface, making the glass visible to birds so that they know to avoid it.

You call a company that sells the film and set an appointment for them to cover the hotel's windows.

The organization is here to explain the importance of reducing |tooltip>[light pollution |tooltiptext>[Light pollution refers to artificial light that shines outdoors, like a bright billboard or a store sign.]] during migration season.
<img src="forthebirds/lightsoutmayor.png"></div>
They explain that most migrating birds fly at night, and that the dazzling city lights confuse their sense of navigation and cause them to go off-course. It also draws birds into the city, making them vulnerable to urban threats and delaying their arrival at their migration destination.

Amber lights are better than white lights because their soft hue still illuminates the area without adding to light pollution. The warmer, softer lights also help the city feel more peaceful at night. It is a simple solution to help make cities safer for birds and for people!
